Penny Meakin 2022

My name is Penny Meakin and I have been involved with the fantastic Leek Open Studios since its inception. My work is contemporary and falls into two very different disciplines:

‘Penny Stamp Artist’ creates original collage using postage stamps. It has a very ‘British’ feel featuring maps, flags and humorous images. It’s great fun and feeds my quirky imagination.

‘Penny Stitch Artist’ emerged as a result of completing a Foundation Degree in Creative Art and Design. Inspired by David Hockney and Alysn Midgelow-Marsden, I create compositions depicting the beautiful landscape close to my home and the Staffordshire Moorlands. My work consists of layers of metallic fabrics, corroded copper, text and maps sewn onto underlying images, that are emulsion-transferred from my own photographs.

I work from a small studio / office at home. It’s a wonderful space full of stamps, books, fabric, metal shims and a couple of sewing machines. It’s my little world.

I love engaging with my customers as the nature of my work is very personal. I complete commissions and delight in getting to know my customers. The idea of showing customers how you work is really appealing and I can’t wait to show you what I do!
