Woods Design 2025
Brian is an Irish designer, maker, and ceramicist based in Stoke-on-Trent. He specialises in mould-making and slip-casting but enjoys exploring all aspects of ceramics, including hand-building. Brian works part-time at Phoenix Tiles in Newcastle-under-Lyme, where he decorates tiles using tube lining and also creates handmade tiles. He has gained experience in other areas of the ceramics industry and take a great interest in learning about its history. Brian says “I love hearing stories from the people of Stoke-on-Trent who grew up in this environment and developed the skills that have been passed down through generations. This connection to the past is important to me, as it helps build my experience and will support me in establishing my own business shortly with teaching classes and workshops.” Brian’s work focuses on creating distinctive, functional interior pieces, lighting, and sculptures by incorporating texture from waste materials. He enjoys experimenting with traditional techniques but deliberately adds complexity, particularly in mould-making, to push the boundaries of ceramics. This approach challenges him to develop as a maker while exploring new methods along the way. Brian’s creations often feature a monochrome palette of white, grey, and black, giving them a striking and minimalist aesthetic. He draws inspiration from reading Ceramic Review, where he learns about other makers whose ideas and designs inspire new directions in his own work.
