Joanna Allen 2023
I am an Artist and Printmaker based in New Mills in the High Peak, with a Degree in Printed Textiles from Manchester Metropolitan University. I’m currently a member of Peak District Artisans. I’m often inspired by imagery from myths and folktales, or literary characters.
My paintings and prints include a personal inventory of treasured possessions and childhood memories, evoking an imaginary world of flora, fauna and magic. There are literary influences at work too, I am currently inspired by Welsh fables from the Mabinogion, especially Blodeuwdd mid transition from flower nymph to owl.
My mixed media artworks include experiments with collagraphs and monoprints. Prints on paper may incorporate watercolour, pastels, even salt and bleach. Using prints as a starting point has lead to further experimentation; I have recently begun to explore collagraph printing onto vintage linen, and have created some unique creatures These include circus ladies, a giant flying goose and several cuckoos of various sizes. Instead of inks I add embroidery and beading to build up a decorative surface. All prints start by constructing a collagraph ‘plate’ from which to print. I hope to demonstrate my process, using mostly scissors, glue and various papers and fabrics of differing textures.
